Early Childhood Parenting Rosh Hashanah

Apples and Honey Glitter Reflection Jars

Rosh Hashanah is a time for reflection – which requires self-regulation, a skill most of the population is still working towards improving. In this blog post, I’ll share how I made apple and honey glitter reflection jars using recycled honey bear jars and apple-shaped Martinelli apple juice containers with my kiddo. These jars are not only a fun and creative activity but also serve as social-emotional support tools in perfect alignment with the reflective nature of the season.

Materials

  • Empty honey bear jars and/or apple-shaped apple containers (I’m using empty martinelli’s apple juice jars)
  • Warm water
  • Clear glue (white glue can also work, but the final result may be slightly cloudy)
  • Glitter in various colors (I like red, green, and golden)

Instructions

  1. Remove any labels from the jars and clean them thoroughly, making sure they are dry before starting.
  2. Fill the jars about 3/4 full with warm water.
  3. Add clear glue to the water until you reach the consistency you desire for the glitter to fall through. The more glue you add, the slower the glitter will move when you shake the jar. Make sure to stir the water and glue mixture well.
  4. Add glitter to the jar. You can choose different colors that represent apples and honey, such as red, gold, and green. The amount of glitter depends on your preference, but start with a teaspoon and adjust as needed.
  5. Close the jar tightly, ensuring that the lid is secure. I use a bit of hot glue to prevent any leaks when shaking the jar.

Now comes the exciting part – modeling how to use the jars! First, start with a foundation about the significance of Rosh Hashanah as a time for reflection and self-improvement. Explain that these jars remind us of the sweetness of the New Year and the apple and honey tradition. Encourage your child to shake the jar gently, focusing on the swirling glitter as a way to calm their minds and prompt self-reflection. You might also suggest they take a few moments each day to watch the glitter settle, using it as an opportunity to breathe deeply, find their center, and practice mindfulness.

These apple and honey glitter reflection jars are an ideal activity for Rosh Hashanah, providing a hands-on and sensory way to connect with the themes of the holiday while also promoting self-regulation and emotional well-being. They make a great addition to any home or classroom setting, offering a creative and engaging way to celebrate the Jewish New Year. Furthermore, it’s great to create these jars now so they can be used throughout the year, not just during Rosh Hashanah. They can serve as a focal point for meditation, stress relief, or as a soothing visual aid when your child experiences emotional overwhelm. Incorporating their use into daily routines will help nurture a positive habit of reflection and mindfulness in your child, which can have lasting benefits for their overall well-being.
